Keyboard and Mouse functions

Requirements Editor provides a variety of methods to select and work with the many features of the application. This topic provides details in working with keyboard shortcuts, mouse selection, and their combinations.

Keyboard

Using the keyboard you can access all standard keyboard features within a Microsoft Windows environment, such as entering text using the typing keys or numeric keypad. The following table highlights the keyboard functions that are more prevailant or noteworthy within the Requirements Editor application.
Note: Longer keyboard shortcut combinations (i.e., Ctrl + W, M) are performed by pressing and releasing the initial key combination (Ctrl + W) and then pressing and releasing the last assigned key (M).
Feature Description
Navigation keys The navigation keys allow you to move the cursor, move around in documents and features such as treeview controls, and edit text. The following lists some common functions of these keys.
  • Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Up Arrow, or Down Arrow: Move the cursor or selection one space or line in the direction of the arrow, or scroll a webpage in the direction of the arrow
  • Home: Move the cursor to the beginning of a line or to the root of a treeview
  • End: Move the cursor to the end of a line or the last displayed element of a treeview
  • Ctrl + Home: Move the cursor to:
    • the beginning of a page or editor
    • the root of a treeview control
    • the first cell of a grid control
  • Ctrl + End Move the cursor to:
    • the end of a page or editor
    • the last displayed element or attribute of a treeview control
    • the last cell of a grid control
  • Page Up: Move the cursor or page up one screen
  • Page Down: Move the cursor or page downone screen
  • Del: In editors, delete the character after the cursor, or the selected text. In a treeview, delete the selected element or attribute and all child elements and attributes.
Useful shortcuts The following table lists the keyboard shortcuts within their respective menus.
  • File menu
    • Alt + F4: Exit Requirements Editor
    • Ctrl + P: Print
    • Ctrl + S: Save current document
    • Ctrl + Shift + S: Save all documents within Requirements Editor that have been changed
  • Edit menu
    • Ctrl + Z: Undo last action
    • Ctrl + Y: Redo the last undone action
    • Ctrl + X: Removes the selection (text or item) and places it in the Clipboard
    • Ctrl + C: Copies the selection (text or item) to the Clipboard
    • Ctrl + V: Pastes the content of the Clipboard if the selected location is valid
    • Ctrl + D: Duplicates the selected item(s)
    • Ctrl + A: Selects all content or items in the scope of the selected content
    • Ctrl + F: Displays the Find window
    • Ctrl + H: Displays the Replace window
    • Ctrl + I: Currently unavailable feature
  • View menu
    • Ctrl + W, M: Displays the Messages pane (can be remembered as Ctrl + W for Window and M for Messages)
    • Shift + Alt + Enter: Toggles Full Screen mode
  • Assembly menu
  • Tools menu
    • F7: Initiates Spell Check and displays the Spell Check window
  • Help menu
    • F1: Displays the online Help documentation

Mouse

Mouse functionality within Requirements Editor utilizes the standard usage practices for Windows applications. Some of the more prevalent practices are:

Keyboard/Mouse, Keyboard multikey combinations

Keyboard + Click (mouse/touchpad) combinations allow for a variety of item selection within Requirements Editor, making working with single and multiple selections easier.
  • Keyboard/Mouse combinations
    • Ctrl + Click: Allows you to select multiple non-sequential items. This is done by selecting a first item and then pressing and holding the Ctrl key while clicking on other items.

    • Shift + Click: Allows you to select multiple sequential items. This is done by selecting a first item and then pressing and holding the Shift key and then clicking on last item you want to include.

  • Multikey combinations
    • Ctrl + Space: Displays the context menu for the selected item. If multiple items are selected, the context menu for the last item is displayed.
    • Shift + Up/Down Arrow key: Adds the next like item (i.e., a selected attribute can only select other attributes) in the direction pressed to the selection.
