Don’t use gray or grayed out to describe commands or options that not available. Instead, use not available. Use dimmed if you need to describe the appearance.

Correct examples
  • The 2018 HMDA Rule Applies is unavailable until HMDA Applies is selected.
  • If PMI appears dimmed, it is unavailable.
Incorrect examples
  • The 2018 HMDA Rule Applies is grayed out until HMDA Applies is selected.
  • If PMI is grayed, it is unavailable.
