Relying on Routing Number in Indorsement

We mentioned in the introduction to this chapter that one of the ways Regulation CC intended to speed up the return process was by allowing paying banks and returning banks to rely on the routing number that appeared in the indorsement of the depositary bank. What this means is that when you are deciding where to send the check for return, or when you are preparing a “qualified return check,” you can use the routing number that appears in the indorsement of the depositary bank. If that number turns out to be incorrect and the return of the check is delayed because of that, you will not be responsible for the delay. [12 CFR 229.30(g)] If more than one routing number appears in the indorsement, you can rely on any of them. [Commentary, 12 CFR 229.30(g)-2]
