Setting Spell Checker Options
Spell checker options allow you to specify the way the spell checker operates. How you set them will depend on the types of forms you produce and your personal preferences and spelling habits.
The spell checker Options dialog can be opened either from the Workspace tab in the Options dialog or while running the spell checker. Changing options while you are running a spell check is useful if you realize that you have the wrong settings for a particular form.
The following options are available:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Ignore capitalized words | Select this option to ignore all words beginning with capital letters. You might want to enable this option if the text being checked contains many proper names. |
| Ignore all-caps words | Select this option to ignore any words containing all capital letters. You might want to enable this option if the text being checked contains a large number of acronyms. |
| Ignore words with numbers | Select this option to ignore words containing embedded digits (e.g.Win95, Q4). You might want to enable this option if the text being checked contains code words or other symbols containing digits. |
| Ignore words with mixed case | Select this option to ignore words containing a non-standard mixture of upper and lower-case letters (e.g., MicroHouse, CapsLock). You might want to enable this option if the text being checked contains a large number of words of this type. |
| Ignore domain names | Select this option to ignore domain names (e.g., www.xyz.com). You might want to enable this option if the text being checked contains many Web site URLs. |
| Report doubled words | Select this option if you want the spell checker to report any words appearing twice in succession. |
| Case sensitive | Select this option if you want the spell checker to distinguish between capitalized and non-capitalized words. For example, if this option is enabled, “Canada” is considered different from “canada,” so “canada” would be reported as a misspelling. If the option is disabled, “Canada” and “canada” would be considered identical. |
| Phonetic suggestions | Select this option if you want the spell checker to make suggestions on the basis of phonetic (“sounds like”) similarity to the misspelled word. Enabling this option tends to improve suggestions for badly misspelled words. However, it will increase the time required to locate suggestions. Note that either this option or the Typographical suggestions option must be enabled or no suggestions will be offered. |
| Typographical suggestions | Select this option if you want the spell checker to make suggestions based on typographical (“looks alike”) similarity to the misspelled word. This option is useful for people who are generally good spellers. Note that either this option or the Phonetic suggestions option must be enabled or no suggestions will be offered. |
| Suggest split words | Enable this option if you want the spell checker to suggest two separate words as a replacement for a misspelling containing two joined words. For example, “is the” would be suggested as a replacement for “isthe.” |
| Auto correct | Select this option if you want the spell checker to automatically change words to their specified dictionary replacements. When this option is disabled, you will be prompted before the words are changed. You must also set this option to use the Change All option for spelling replacements. |
In addition to the above options, you may also specify the language of your main dictionary and the level at which you want the spell checker to search for and suggest replacement words.
